Product Description

Holding the stage (Road Shows, Vol. 4) is Sonny Rollins pure – this is the essence of Sonny Rollins as a musician. These are some of his most expressive live recordings, from 1979 at the Pori Jazz festival in Finland (Disco Monk, featuring Al Foster, Mark Soskin and Jerome Harris) to 2012 in Marseille and Prague. The track list is featuring a stunning solo performance of 5 minutes plus a groovy version of Don’t Stop The Carnival and a beautiful In A Sentimental Mood. The 10 tracks on this disc simply confirm: Sonny Rollins is one of a kind! A master improviser and unique musician.

Theodore Walter Rollins was born on September 7, 1930 in New York City. He grew up in Harlem not far from the Savoy Ballroom, the Apollo Theatre, and the doorstep of his idol, Coleman Hawkins. After early discovery of Fats Waller and Louis Armstrong, he started out on alto saxophone, but at the age of sixteen he switched to the tenor, inspired by Hawkins. In the early fifties, he established a reputation first among musicians, then the public, as the most brash and creative young tenor on the scene, through his work with Miles Davis, Thelonius Monk, and the MJQ. Since then he has recorded numerous genre defining albums and is seen as the leading saxophonist of our time, still searching for the ultimate note in the expression of his emotions through music. He won his first performance Grammy for This Is What I Do (2000), and his second for 2004’s Without a Song (The 9/11 Concert), in the Best Jazz Instrumental Solo category (for “Why Was I Born”). In addition, Sonny received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences in 2004.
